“After all, in our region, there's been a wound for years on the body of the Muslim world under the shadow of the occupation of the holy land of Palestine and the beloved [city of] al-Quds,” Rohani stated at a rally in the Iranian capital, Tehran, held to mark International Quds Day.
The occasion is observed each year on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan. The day was designated by the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, over three decades ago as the Quds Day.
Back then, the great Imam called on all Muslims and non-Muslims across the world to turn out in a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people and in opposition to the occupier Zionist regime of Israeli. Meanwhile, million-man marches have been held across Iran, as well as the other countries.
In August 1979, the late founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Khomeini declared the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan as International Quds Day, calling on Muslims across the world to mark the annual occasion by holding street rallies.
Palestinians are seeking to create an independent state on the territories of the West Bank, East al-Quds (Jerusalem), and the Gaza Strip, and are demanding that Israel withdraw from the Palestinian territories occupied in the 1967 Six-Day War.
