People in Cuba took to the streets of the capital Havana holding flags and portraits of the revolutionary leader to mark the first day of the national mourning announced by the government.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro led a ceremony in Caracas and announced three days of national mourning and Bolivian President Evo Morales also paid tribute to Castro.
Several world leaders have been paying tribute to the 20th-Century icon.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has described Castro as a brother and a warrior who fought to the end of his life to keep the flag of justice and freedom high.
In a message, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif praised Castro as an exemplary figure "in the fight against colonialism and exploitation... and the independence-seeking fight of oppressed nations."
In reaction to the death of Cuba's iconic former president, China's President Xi Jinping said that the "Chinese people have lost a close comrade and a sincere friend."
In a message broadcast on the national television, Xi said, "Comrade Castro will live forever. History and people will remember him."
Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Castro as "the symbol of an era" .
Putin said in a telegram to Cuban President Raul Castro cited by the Kremlin , "The name of this distinguished statesman is rightly considered the symbol of an era in modern world history.".
Fidel Castro., who would be laid to rest on December fourth, was the leader of a revolution that toppled US-backed client regime of Batista in 1959.
People in Cuba have begun nine days of mourning declared over the death of Fidel Castro.
Fidel ruled the Latin American country for five decades until 2006, when he ceded power to his brother, Raul.
